River Rafting Delight

Rishikesh is rightfully called the Mecca of white
water rafting in India. It is here that the sport has seen its
beginnings and is coming to maturity. The river Ganga has been host to
many a great white water sportsmen from all over the world and it has
not been without reason. The upper valley tributaries of the Ganga, the
Alaknanda and the Bhagirathi are reasonable expedition level rivers.
They meet at Devprayag to form the Ganga which for the next 70 kms to
Rishikesh is another expedition in itself. The 35 kms of the river from
Kaudiyala to Rishikesh is the commercial white water hub of the country.
With more than 35 riverside camps and over 100 river rafting outfitters,
the sport of river rafting is growing by leaps and bounds in India by
the passing years. But it is the section from Shivpuri to Rishikesh that
sees the maximum number of river rafting enthusiasts every year.
While at the Camp RapidFire you can undertake four
days of river rafting as follows.
Section 1 - Devprayag to Kaudiyala (Camp RapidFire is
3 kms from here) - This is a great long day section with lots of Grade
II Rapids and long float section to enjoy body surfing and swimming in
the river. On a planned itinerary to raft this section one leaves the
camp after an early breakfast and drives to Devprayag (35 kms) where you
put in to the river just below the confluence of the two main
tributaries. Mid way we stop at Beas Ghat for a picnic lunch break and
end up our rafting at Kaudiyala or Camp RapidFire as planned by late
afternoon.
Section 2 - Kaudiyala to Marine Drive
- Starting from Kaudiyala this two hour section starts with a grade III
rapid called the Daniel's Dip and has a long float section till Byasi
where you encounter one of the most well known rapids on the Ganga "The
Wall" grade III+. With various grade II rapids thrown in this section is
not generally attempted with beginners on the rafts.
Section 3 - Marine Driver to Shivpuri
- An ideal section to hone your paddling skills, take long floats and
encounter some good rapids this section is rightfully the initiation
section for the Ganga. With rapids like the "Three Blind Mice" and
"Black Money" the section provides good opportunities for beginners to
practice their paddling for the big rapids on the river.
Section 4 - Shivpuri to NIM beach, Rishikesh
- Undoubtedly the most commercial section on river, this is the section
with the maximum number of rapids ranging from grade II to grade IV.
With names like "The Golf Course", "Club house", "T-off", "Roller
Coaster" to name a few this section provides for the perfect one day
rafting exhilaration to a lot of one day visitors to the river.
