A
botanist's paradise,
Anthropologiste delight,
one of the most enchanting
valleys for trekkers, one of the best forests in Asia, unique in culture
and history, in the Tons Valley people are over-awed by the Kauravas,
the wrong doers, and worship them as gods and Polyandry, and to some
extent, polygamy, are the normal practice. The Har Ki Doon Valley
deserves the title of Valley of Flowers. One of the top ten Techincal
River Expeditions on the planet is on the upper sections of the Tons.
The list seemed to be growing by the passing years. Five years back we
laid our eyes on this valley as the venue for one of our future camps.
Today The Camp MegaTons is a reality and coming to life of a dream that
we saw five years ago.

The Camp Site as we
found it....
The Camp Megatons
runs from May till
July each year in the western part of Uttaranchal, India in the Jaunsar
Bawar region on the banks of the Tons River. Located at a pleasant 3500
feet above sea level, this area is rich in every type of Western
Himalayan flora and fauna, densely forested with deodar, pine, alpine
oak, birch, chestnut, rhododendron and jamun. An excellent river camping
site, relaxing walks, ample angling opportunities and great whitewater
make it an ideal summer camp
activities for everyone including families and children,
from the quiet holiday-maker to the die hard adventure seeker.
Just a bit over 400 kms from Delhi, India it
offers an escape from 4 days onwards to a week or two. White Water
Rafting on the Tons (the biggest tributary of the Yamuna that apparently
is bigger than Yamuna at the confluence, with its source in the
snowfields of the 20,720 ft high mountain, Banderpunch), a small volume,
Class 4 river offers an excellent adrenaline rush and adds to the
excitement of being in the outdoors. Staying at
Camp MegaTons in the midst of thickly forested
hillsides and riverside beach combined with hikes and treks in the hills
around our Camp and fishing for trout, make it a memorable family
getaway away
from the summer heat of the plains. And for keener rafters and kayakers,
try out a multi-day expedition style river rafting trip on the Tons
River till the dam at Icchhari. The paddler Magazine has classified the
upper section of Tons as one of the Top 10 Technical River Expeditions
in the world.
